Book Description

It was almost winter and Bear was getting sleepy.
But first, Bear had a story to tell...

Bear found his friend Mouse, but Mouse was busy gathering seeds and didnt have time to listen to a story. Then Bear saw his friend Duck, but Duck was getting ready to fly south. What about his friend Toad? He was busy looking for a warm place to sleep. By the time Bear was through helping his friends get ready for winter, would anyone still be awake to hear his story?

This endearing story of friendship and patience is a worthy companion to Philip and Erin Steads last collaboration, A Sick Day for Amos McGee, winner of the 2011 Caldecott Medal.

Bear Has a Story to Tell is a Kirkus Reviews Best Childrens Book of 2012. This title has Common Core connections.

Exquisite color and good layout for the illustrations with the sense of more happening off the page. The plot seemed cheesy to begin with, but I found myself liking the way it ended. I liked the way that the animals preparing for winter had the ring of authenticity for each of the animals involved. And, the idea of a character being repeatedly told to delay the telling of a story to others is a fairly common one within HUMAN families. So, the question remains, am I okay with the mixture of authentic animal behavior mixed with decidedly human emotions and behavior? Not really, but I will admit to seeing some great uses for this book in storytime, both from the angle of themes of approaching winter and themes of the power and fun of stories.
